How long is 4 seconds?

This summer I photographed more people then I typically do. I got used to telling people to meet me around 6:30. A few days ago I told my friend just that, so when we met I was shocked that in fall the days start getting shorter. Opps! So my shoot didn’t go well but I wanted to at least get a few pictures. I loathed the idea of coming back with nothing. It was well past sunset into the twilight time of sundown.

I knew that I could always bump my ISO up to a crazy number but if I did they would be bad and mega grainy. I decided to try to shoot with a long exposure instead. I had my ISO on 100, but my exposure needed to be @ 4seconds to expose correctly.I set my camera on a tripod and used the self timer ad I forgot my remote shutter release. I also lowered my F-stop to about 4-5. It took a few tries to get it perfect but it was fun to try. I was honest with my subject and told her about the time and light loss and it was kind of a gamble (I should also say this was a free shoot for a friend)

Here are my results

  1. I agree with rangewriter, four seconds seems like an eternity when it comes to shooting an animate subject. Your friend did an amazing job of remaining quite still. I couldn’t detect even a hint of motion blur in any of your shots. Well done!

  2. Oh, what a relief to see you’re working and haven’t gone off somewhere. Look forward to the next post. All the talk about shutters and time relay or is it delay? … above my head. I more or less aim my little digital and press the button and hope for the best. Been developing my eye to spot things.
