Artists are free to become stale and ineffective.

September 26, 2012 by fstopfun

I learned photography in high-school continued in college and then I graduated and of course I knew everything…. (or so I thought). A few years later I found my skills stagnant, my photographs were boring, and my desire to photograph was fleeting. I would see other artists works and be blown away! I remember attending a few different art openings of friends I graduated with and having the realization that I was obsolete, my friends have passed me by because they pushed themselves to continue […]

Over 200,000 photographs. What did I learn?

August 31, 2012 by fstopfun

Looking back this morning I couldn’t help but think of how much I have learned about photography over the years. I would say the majority of photographs I have taken are really snapshots masquerading as photographs. : ) Many professional photographers say your first 10,000 images are worthless…. to a point I have to agree. When I looked at my old camera I learned that I have taken over 150,000 images with just that camera! So I estimate that I have probably taken over 200,000 […]

Bye Bear See ya Later

So Long, Silly old Bear…

August 28, 2012 by fstopfun

My son has a special bear named…. well what else, Bear. For the last 5 years he and his pal have been as close as Christopher Robin and Pooh. This week is the first time he will be in school all day. I was thinking about the one Winnie the Pooh book where Christopher Robin leaves to go off to school. Maybe he really did go to school, but I also see the symbolism used to show the transition to an older age. I know the […]

OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

August 21, 2012 by fstopfun

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own.  And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go. You’ll look up and down streets.  Look ‘em over with care. About some you will say, “I don’t […]

Give to the future (if we’re still here)

August 16, 2012 by fstopfun

What would you bottle for a future generation if you could bottle anything?   Would you bottle an emotion like joy, love, gratitude, or humility? Maybe the smell of a new born child, or the intoxicating smell of sweet-grass? Perhaps set of family values or a memory of times past?   If I could bottle my hopes and dreams for mankind. I would remind them all there once was a time, when importance was placed on a simpler way. With gadgets switched […]

Sizzle Sizzle Boom

August 15, 2012 by fstopfun

What is it about firework explosions that make me stop and look? Maybe it’s the juvenile delinquent in me that loves to see things explode. Maybe it’s the artist in me that loves how rich the colors are. It could be I love to see high contrast of the burning mixture against the night sky. Maybe it just makes me realize that were only here for a flash. Do you like fireworks too? What is it about them that makes […]

Shine on you crazy diamond

July 26, 2012 by fstopfun

I was very lucky in hindsight to have a pseudo-father growing up. As an artist and poet, with a giving heart for the beat down and tired he was wonderfully unique. Not wealthy by the worlds standard yet one of the richest people I have ever known. He made his living by going to flea markets buying items then with nothing more than a rag and warm soapy water, He would bring out the beauty then resell them at his […]
